Where Sakkala is
Sakkala is organised around Hurghada marina, several squares (including Midan Sakkala and Martyrs' Square) and the great harbour mosque. The Sakkala page gives the essentials at a glance. To the north, El Dahar is the old town, with its souk and fishing harbour; to the south, Sheraton Road concentrates the hotels. Sakkala is the hinge: people meet here for dinner when staying elsewhere.
What to see and do
The marina and its promenade

According to Wikivoyage the yacht harbour has about 200 berths, with yachts up to 50 m. Marina Boulevard, the promenade, lines shops, cafés and restaurants facing the boats. See also our page on Hurghada marina. The promenade is pleasant in the evening; we found no entry fee.
The harbour mosque
The great harbour mosque (El Mina Mosque) opened in January 2012 and is regarded as the largest mosque in the Red Sea governorate. Non-Muslims are not normally admitted; the outside photographs well, especially lit up.
The old Sheraton
A circular building closed since 1997 and visible from the small harbour to the south-east: everything is on the page about the old Sheraton of Hurghada.
Diving from the district
Several dive bases are set up in Sakkala's hotels, including Aquarius Diving Club (Marriott), Dive Hurghada, Sub Aqua (Le Pacha) and Seawolf Divers according to Wikivoyage. For the sites, see dive and snorkelling sites.
Where to eat
The district holds most of the centre's dining. A few addresses cited by Wikivoyage, to check on the spot:
| Type | Addresses cited | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Egyptian cuisine | Gad, El Dar Darak, Koshary El Iskandrany | Gad is reported open 24 hours; El Dar Darak is described as one of the best local-cuisine tables, 1 pm to 1 am |
| Fish and seafood | El Mina Fish, Felucca Seafood, Star Fish, Al Halaka Fish | Fish is usually sold by weight: ask the price first |
| International | Granada, Moby Dick, La Cantina, Las Vegas Steakhouse | Terraces, sea views for some; alcohol is served at some addresses |
| World cuisines | Pizza Roma.it, Acropolis, Red Dragon, Syake Sushi | Italian, Greek, Asian, sushi |
| Fast food and cafés | KFC, McDonald's (until 2:30 am), Costa Coffee, Vienna Cafe | Handy late at night, with children |
For a more local meal, head down to the old quarter: the El Dahar fish market offers fresh fish and harbour restaurants.
Going out in the evening
Hurghada is not a nightlife capital. According to Wikivoyage, the district's only nightclub, Calypso Club & Lounge, was temporarily closed; most evenings are spent at a restaurant, café or hotel bar (Granada, Waves, Las Vegas Steakhouse, Grill & Chill with live music on Sundays). The marina promenade is the main place to stroll.
Getting around
- Taxi: the usual way. Agree the price before getting in or use Uber.
- Minibus: they link El Dahar and Sakkala, very cheap but with no fixed timetable.
- Airport: about 30 minutes by taxi according to Wikivoyage.
- Long-distance buses: EG Bus, Go Bus, High Jet and SuperJet stop at El Dahar, on Nasr Road.
Staying here?
Sakkala suits travellers who want local life, restaurants within walking distance and a more modest budget than the big all-inclusive hotels of the coast. To compare areas, see where to stay in Hurghada. For the beach, count on a day pass or an excursion: see public beaches in Hurghada.
