Free, but not always

In Hurghada, "free access" does not mean nobody will ask you for money. In tourist streets, sellers, drivers and fake guides offer services; a "gift" or a free tea can come before a sale. Politely refuse from the start what you did not ask for. Beaches are a special case: many belong to hotels and are not free. The guide to scams to avoid in Hurghada details the most common scenarios.

In town

The marina promenade

The Marina Boulevard promenade in Hurghada

The promenade at Hurghada marina, in Sakkala, runs along the boats and comes alive at dusk. The walk costs nothing; only the cafés and restaurants are paid. See also Sakkala.

El Mina Mosque from the outside

El Mina Mosque, opened in January 2012 according to Wikivoyage, is the largest mosque in the Red Sea governorate. Non-Muslims are not normally admitted; the outside is free and looks good at night.

The old souk and harbour of El Dahar

Wandering through the old El Dahar souk and around the fish market costs nothing. Looking, smelling and comparing prices is free; haggling creates a moral commitment, with no obligation to buy. It is the most authentic part of town: see El Dahar.

The old Sheraton

The circular building closed since 1997 can be looked at from the outside without paying. Do not go in.

At the sea

Public beaches

The public beaches are the cheapest in town: user reviews mention a symbolic entry of a few pounds. Lonely Planet finds them unappealing. For a nicer beach you have to pay for a day pass.

Sunset

On Hurghada's coast the Red Sea lies to the east: you do not see the sun set over the water. In the evening it is the lights of the harbour and the marina that make the show.

Not free, but cheap

  • Minibuses between El Dahar and Sakkala: cheaper than a taxi.
  • The Hurghada Museum: 300 EGP for a foreign adult (October 2026), so not free.
  • The Grand Aquarium: 35 USD at the desk, so a separate budget.
