Sharm el-Naga: snorkelling, reef and day trip from Hurghada

Updated on October 25, 2026

Sharm el-Naga is a sandy bay with a healthy reef a few metres from the shore, about an hour's drive south of Hurghada (near Safaga, approximate). It is not a hotel but a day-trip beach: the day trip with transfer, snorkelling gear, entry and lunch costs about 54 to 69 dollars (seen in October 2026 on reseller listings). You swim in a marked zone without touching the corals; it is the trip to choose if you prefer the reef to a crowded boat.

Highlights

The sand slopes gently to a coral reef with emperor fish and butterflyfish; the water is clear and you start straight from the beach.

The reef is explored with mask and snorkel between safety buoys; the rule is not to touch the corals or sea urchins.

Tips

  • To sort the options: Sharm el-Naga suits families and beginners because the water is calm and the reef is reachable from the beach, while the islands (Giftun, Orange Bay) offer more variety but need a boat. Compare the trips in snorkelling in Hurghada: which boat trip. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes and cash for extras. Listings say entry and lunch are included; check it.

How to get there

The day trip leaves from your hotel (transfer included, about an hour's drive). To go on your own, allow a taxi or rental car from Hurghada; see getting around Hurghada.

Opening hours

Best: October to May, in the morning
Day trip, early departure from the hotel, back in the late afternoon; exact times depend on the organiser
