Salem Express wreck at Safaga: history, diving and getting there from Hurghada (2026)
Quick answer: the Salem Express is an Egyptian ferry that sank in December 1991 near Safaga, in the Red Sea, after hitting the Hyndman Reefs. It lies on its side on a sandy bottom. It is a dive for experienced divers only, and a place of remembrance: the remains of many victims are said to be still inside. You dive it from Safaga, about 50 to 65 km from Hurghada, with a dive club; it is not a site to discover on a simple snorkeling trip. Sources disagree on the exact date of the sinking (14 to 17 December 1991 depending on the source), the number of victims (470 officially, other figures quoted elsewhere) and the depth (12 to 32 m, the shallowest part around 7 m).

Tips
- To dive: advanced certification (Advanced or equivalent), guided dive, check your club's insurance and the weather (the site is exposed to waves). Clubs in Safaga and Hurghada offer the trip; compare price, number of dives, transfer from Hurghada and included insurance. Sources disagree on many figures: ask your club for the conditions. If you do not dive, there is no visit to make here: see Safaga or the Hurghada dive sites instead. Another famous wreck: Thistlegorm from Hurghada. To sleep near the sites: where to stay in Safaga.
