Makadi Bay is a Red Sea resort area about 30 km south of Hurghada (25 km from the airport, according to tour operator brochures). The bay is mostly made up of large all-inclusive hotels set along a gently shelving sandy beach and a coral reef you can swim out to. People come here to swim, dive and do nothing much, not to wander around town: there is no centre to visit, and life revolves around the hotels and the beach. For an evening out or some shopping you have to head back towards Hurghada or to Sahl Hasheesh, the neighbouring resort to the north.
Highlights

The bay from a hotel terrace
Makadi Bay's hotels step down in palm gardens to the beach, with jetties reaching into turquoise water. Dive and excursion boats anchor just offshore.

The coast seen from the sea
From a boat you can pick out the long fringe of palms and parasols, and behind it the arid mountains of the Eastern Desert. Day trips at sea leave from the bay.

A gently shelving sandy beach
The seabed drops away gradually, which makes getting into the water easy for children and beginners. Buoys mark out the swimming area.
Practical info
Tips
- Makadi Bay's coral reef is close to the shore: a mask and snorkel are enough to see the fish, and several hotels have their own jetty for getting in. Nearby dive sites include Tobia Soraya and Ras Abu Soma (see our page on dive sites in Hurghada). In practice the beaches belong to the hotels: if you are not staying here, check before you go. Among the hotels in the bay, tour operators mention the Iberotel Makadi Beach, the TUI Blue Makadi Gardens and the Stella Makadi Beach Resort and Spa. To compare areas before booking, read our guide where to stay in Hurghada.
How to get there
Makadi Bay is about 30 km south of central Hurghada and 25 to 31 km from the airport depending on the source, which means 30 to 40 minutes by road. Hotels offer airport transfers; otherwise take a taxi or a transfer booked in advance (see our guide from the airport to the centre and hotels). To visit the bay for a day, plan on a round-trip taxi and agree the price before setting off.
