To know before choosing

  • Level: Advanced Open Water or equivalent; an Open Water diver may be accepted according to some sources, but current and depth call for experience.
  • Sharm or Hurghada? According to one source, the wreck is about 40 km from Sharm el-Sheikh (3 hours by boat) and about 65 km from Hurghada (4.5 hours). See Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh.
  • The Thistlegorm is not an introductory dive site: to start, see learn to dive in Hurghada and introductory dive.
  • Sites in the area: see dive sites in Hurghada.

Why this site is famous

The wreck holds vehicles and war material visible in the holds (a locomotive, trucks and motorbikes according to descriptions): you dive it for this cargo, not for the coral.

FAQ

Can you do the Thistlegorm in one day from Hurghada? It is possible but with a long journey and two dives at most; a liveaboard is preferred.
