The Giftun islands (Giftun Kebir, the big one, and Giftun Soraya, the small one) form a protected marine area about ten kilometres off Hurghada. It is the best-selling day out at sea from the city: white-sand beaches, turquoise water and coral reefs where boats stop for snorkelling. Most visitors join a shared boat for the day; private boats and speedboats are also available. The prices below are ranges found with tour operators in October 2026.
Highlights

The white-sand beaches
Long beaches line very clear water on the islands, shading from turquoise to deep blue. This is the swimming and picnic stop of the day, often with lunch served on board or on the beach.

The island seen from the sea
Giftun is low, barren and has no village: from the boat it looks like a pale line on the horizon. The crossing takes about 20 to 45 minutes depending on the boat and the sea.

Beach huts and snorkelling
A few wooden huts house the beach services on an open stretch of sand. Boats usually make two or three stops over coral drop-offs, about 45 minutes each. An instructor or guide goes with the group, and mask, snorkel and life jacket are almost always provided.

Tips
- According to offers found in October 2026, a shared boat costs about 25 to 45 USD per adult for a day of around 7 hours with lunch and drinks; a private speedboat costs considerably more. Check what is included: the national park entrance fee, the coast guard fee and the hotel transfer may be charged separately, especially if you stay in Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay, El Gouna or Safaga. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, sunglasses, cash and a copy of your passport. Do not touch the coral or feed the fish: both are forbidden in the park. If you get seasick, take medication before boarding.
How to get there
By boat only, from the Hurghada marina or another of the city's harbours. Shared excursions usually include the transfer from your hotel to the quay; otherwise a taxi to the marina is enough. Book the day before, or earlier in high season.
