Esna Temple (Khnum): visit, ticket, opening hours and Nile cruise in 2026
Esna Temple, dedicated to the ram god Khnum, is a hypostyle hall of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, about 55 km south of Luxor on the Nile. It lies about ten metres below street level: you go down to see 24 columns covered in reliefs and an astronomical ceiling whose colours have been rediscovered by restoration. A visit takes 30 to 45 minutes. Ticket: 60 to 160 EGP according to three guides, no official price found; hours differ (7:00 am to 7:00 pm for one, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm for others). Most visitors stop here on a Luxor-Aswan cruise, see the 2-3 day cruise from Hurghada.
Highlights

The front of the hall
Six columns with floral capitals; only this hall survives of the temple, the rest lies under the town.

Another angle of the hall
A side view: you can see how sunken the temple is below street level.
Practical info
Tips
- The ceiling and columns were cleaned by an Egyptian-German mission (University of Tübingen): restoration was under way in 2025 and 2026, so some parts may be under works. Esna is rarely visited alone: the cruise from Luxor or the 3-day trip from Hurghada includes it with Edfu and Kom Ombo. Boats pass through the Esna lock: the temple is visited when the stop is scheduled.
How to get there
Esna is about 55 km south of Luxor (approximate distance). A driver or taxi takes about 1 hour; from Hurghada, go through Luxor: see Hurghada to Luxor.
