Edfu Temple: ticket, opening hours and visit from Hurghada

Updated on October 25, 2026

Edfu Temple, dedicated to the falcon god Horus, is one of the best preserved Egyptian temples: a pylon about 36 m high, a columned court, roofed halls and fully carved walls. Built in the Ptolemaic period, it takes about an hour to visit. Edfu is roughly 100 km south of Luxor: from Hurghada count about 290 to 320 km to Luxor and then the same road south, a very long day. People therefore go on a cruise or a multi-day tour, see the 2-3 day cruise from Hurghada, or from Luxor with Kom Ombo.

The façade is covered in large reliefs of the victorious king; a granite statue of Horus guards the entrance.

The roofed halls keep their ceilings and reliefs in good condition, which is rare in Egyptian temples.

Practical info

Tips

  • Two tour listings give 550 EGP for Edfu (Kom Ombo 450), payable by card; unofficial source, to be confirmed. Many tours combine Edfu and Kom Ombo: a private day from Luxor is offered from about 93 US dollars. The horse carriages offered at the station are a fare to agree before getting in.

How to get there

Edfu is on the Nile between Luxor and Aswan, about 100 km from Luxor (approximate distance). From Hurghada, go through Luxor: see Hurghada to Luxor: bus or transfer. The simplest is the cruise with hotel pickup.

Opening hours

Best: At opening time, October to April
A 2026 entrance-fee guide says 7:00 am to 4:00 pm; not confirmed by an official source
