Aswan High Dam: visit, opening hours, ticket and what you see in 2026

Updated on October 30, 2026

The Aswan High Dam, built between 1960 and 1970 on the Nile, holds back Lake Nasser and ended the yearly floods. A visit takes 30 to 45 minutes: you walk or drive along the crest (about 3.8 km long, 111 m high), look at the lake on one side and the power station on the other, then go up to the Egyptian-Soviet friendship monument. Hours found: about 6:00 am to 6:00 pm (one guide, March 2026); ticket: between 30 and 200 EGP according to two articles, no official source. Almost everyone sees it in the half-day "High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and Philae" trip.

Highlights

The high-voltage lines of the hydroelectric plant; the friendship monument, higher up, gives the best view of Lake Nasser.

Tips

  • There is nothing to buy on site: book instead a private half-day that combines the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Philae, from 70 to 98 US dollars depending on the offer (seen October 2026; check what is included). Security checks take place around the dam: bring ID. No drones (see drone and photo rules in Egypt).

How to get there

The dam is about 13 km south of Aswan centre (approximate distance); take a taxi or a driver, or a group tour. From Hurghada, Aswan is about 500 km away: see Hurghada to Aswan.

Opening hours

Best: In the morning, October to April
About 6:00 am to 6:00 pm according to a March 2026 guide; not confirmed by an official source
