What is allowed, tolerated, banned
| Situation | Rule seen | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Flying a drone | Ministry of Defence permit required | do not expect one for a holiday |
| Importing a drone | military approval required, often refused | frequent confiscation at the airport |
| Mini toy | one exception quoted by a guide: toy of 150 g maximum, no GPS or camera, 100 m range | single source, do not count on it |
| Taking a drone out again | no simple export procedure | if it is confiscated, keep the receipt |
| Photographing soldiers, police stations, airports | forbidden | see below |
The risks quoted
According to the guides I read, the maximum penalty for possession would be 7 years in prison; the legal basis is quoted inconsistently (a 1981 law as amended, or a 2017 law). At best the device is confiscated with a receipt and returned on departure, sometimes for a storage fee. France also states that drone use is banned without special authorisation: see before leaving for Hurghada: laws, bans, formalities.
Photos: where to hold back
Do not photograph military buildings, police stations, airports, or police and soldiers. Around the marina and ports, be discreet and ask before photographing people. For mosques, dress and rules: dress code in Egypt.
Good images without a drone
- The desert at sunset: safaris leave in the late afternoon; see desert safari from Hurghada.
- The sea from above: a boat trip or the Hurghada marina gives good viewpoints without flying.
- Underwater: a waterproof camera is enough for the reefs; for trips, see snorkelling in Hurghada: which boat trip.
