Mahmya Island (Giftun): beach, snorkelling and boat trip from Hurghada

Updated on October 25, 2026

Mahmya is a protected beach on the south of Giftun Island, across from Hurghada, with a clear lagoon, shaded huts and coral heads to explore while snorkelling. The typical trip lasts about 7.5 hours: 45 to 60 minutes by boat, swimming, snorkelling and lunch, for about 25 to 30 dollars by shared boat (seen in October 2026; the national park entry, about 5 euros, is often extra). It is less crowded than Orange Bay because southern Giftun is further away; it is the trip to choose for a real beach day.

Highlights

The beach and the lagoon

The beach and the lagoon

A long beach of pale sand at the south of Giftun, with a shallow lagoon and shaded shelters; the water is turquoise and the bottom sandy.

Giftun Island

The island is low and deserted, a protected marine area without a village; the crossing to the south takes 45 to 60 minutes.

Tips

  • To sort the options: the shared day boat with lunch (the cheapest, about 7.5 hours) suits families and those who mainly want to settle down; the speedboat excursion is faster but shorter on the island. One traveller notes the boat is a motorboat, not a sailing boat, despite the title. Speedboats are not suited to people with back problems. In December the wind is very strong: prefer the warm months. To compare with the other islands, see Giftun and Orange Bay islands: which trip and Giftun.

How to get there

Trips leave from the marina or a port in Hurghada, with hotel pickup; there is no access without a boat.

Opening hours

Best: April to October, calm sea
Day trip of about 7.5 hours, morning departure; times depend on the organiser
