Abu Dabbab: turtles, dugongs and snorkelling near Marsa Alam

Updated on October 25, 2026

Abu Dabbab is a shallow bay about 30 km north of Marsa Alam, known for green turtles grazing on the seagrass; you may also, more rarely, see a dugong. It is the region's most famous snorkelling spot: you enter from the beach, with no boat. Dugongs are never guaranteed. From Hurghada the bay is about 285 km by road to Marsa Alam, around 3 hours, so a day of over 6 hours on the road: better to sleep on site, see Hurghada to Marsa Alam and Marsa Alam.
