The areas compared
| Area | Distance to the airport (seen) | Who for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Port Ghalib and marina | 6 to 10 km | easy arrival and departure, a few restaurants, business or family stay | the most developed area, around the marina |
| Marsa Mubarak | about 7 km from Port Ghalib | reef, turtles, dugongs reported | bay very busy in mid-morning |
| Abu Dabbab | about 52 km (one hotel listing) | easy snorkelling with turtles, see Abu Dabbab | longer transfer, few restaurants within walking distance |
| Wadi el Gemal (south) | further still | nature, quiet, house reef | check access to the sea and meals |
As an order of magnitude, the same source puts one large hotel 32 km from the airport, another 46 km and another 48 km: the south almost always means a transfer of an hour or more.
How to choose the hotel
- The house reef: ask whether you enter from the beach or from a jetty, and whether the area is supervised. This is the point of Marsa Alam, see Marsa Alam.
- The transfer: ask for the price and duration from the airport; a hotel may offer a paid shuttle. If you come from Hurghada, count about 3 hours by road, see Hurghada to Marsa Alam.
- All-inclusive: outside the hotels there are few restaurants. If you want to go out, stay in Port Ghalib.
- Season: the sea suits October to May best; summer is very hot.
Our choice
- First time, family or short stay: Port Ghalib, for simplicity.
- Snorkelling and turtles: Marsa Mubarak or Abu Dabbab, with a hotel with accessible reef.
- Quiet, nature: the south, towards Wadi el Gemal, with a car or transfer arranged for every outing.

Hotel pick: Marina Lodge at Port Ghalib (Booking score 9.2, read 30 October 2026): in the Port Ghalib area; 705 reviews on Booking. Limit: Port Ghalib is not the place for turtles: Marsa Mubarak and Abu Dabbab mean a transfer.
Hotel pick: Casa Mare Resort (Booking score 9.4, read 30 October 2026): 17 km south of Marsa Alam airport; 135 reviews on Booking. Limit: it has only 135 reviews so far, so its score can still move.
Hotel pick: Steigenberger Coraya Beach (Booking score 9.8, read 30 October 2026): in the Coraya Bay area; adults-friendly, 16 years and over; 571 reviews on Booking. Limit: it is aimed at guests aged 16 and over, so it is not the choice for families with young children.
