Marsa Alam: what to do, when to go and distance from Hurghada

Updated on October 25, 2026

Marsa Alam is a coast of reefs, turtles and dugongs, much quieter and wilder than Hurghada: few restaurants outside the hotels and long distances by car. The big draw is the reefs in front of the hotels and the trips to Abu Dabbab. The town is about 285 km south of Hurghada, around 3 hours by road: see Hurghada to Marsa Alam and the comparison Hurghada or Marsa Alam. A day from Hurghada would mean over 6 hours on the road: spend two or three nights.

At many resorts you enter the water directly from the beach or a jetty; that is the reason to come here rather than to Hurghada.

Practical info

Tips

  • Marsa Alam airport is about 60 km north of the main hotel area according to one source (transfer of 45 minutes to 1.5 hours): if you stay in the south it may be quicker than Hurghada. Transfers from Hurghada are quoted at 70 to 85 US dollars as an on-demand shuttle (about 3 hours 15); prices vary. For a day tour, the most visible offer on GetYourGuide is the Abu Dabbab snorkelling tour. To sleep, see where to stay in Marsa Alam.

How to get there

By the coast road from Hurghada (about 285 km, 3 hours), or by plane to Marsa Alam airport (RMF) if your stay is centred on the sea. See Hurghada to Marsa Alam.
