Siwa Oasis: what to see, how to get there and tour from Hurghada

Updated on October 30, 2026

Siwa Oasis, in the Western Desert near the Libyan border, is about 750 km from Cairo: a trip of several days, impossible as an excursion from Hurghada. It offers salt lakes where you float, the so-called Cleopatra's spring, the Shali mud-brick fortress, the Mountain of the Dead and the temple of the Oracle of Amun, which Alexander the Great visited. From Hurghada you must first reach Cairo (flight or 5 to 6 hours by road, see Hurghada to Cairo: bus or transfer), then count three days on a tour. Three days is the sensible minimum.

Highlights

4x4 tours lead to the dunes, salt lakes and hot springs; sandboarding is possible.

Tips

  • We did not find the ticket price of the oracle temple: tours include it. The overnight bus Cairo-Siwa takes 9 to 12 hours (about 200 EGP in 2022, an old fare); hurried travellers take a 3-day tour from Cairo. The most booked on GetYourGuide is the 3-day tour with safari and camp (4.9 from 124 reviews). Count 13 hours' drive out from Cairo according to that listing. Siwa is conservative: cover shoulders and knees.

How to get there

Siwa is about 310 km from Marsa Matrouh (about 4 hours by bus) and 750 km from Cairo. From Hurghada, fly or drive to Cairo, then a tour or overnight bus. With domestic flights, check the schedules.

Opening hours

Best: October to April
Sites generally from morning to sunset; hours to ask on site, no official source found
