Giza Pyramids from Hurghada: day trip to Cairo, duration and prices

Updated on October 18, 2026

The Giza pyramids are about 450 km from Hurghada, on the far side of the Eastern Desert. The day trip is very popular, but it is long: allow 12 to 16 hours door to door if you fly (the flight to Cairo takes about 1 hour), and nearly 20 hours by road, with 5 to 6 hours of driving each way. On the plateau, the three great pyramids (Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure) and the Great Sphinx take 2 to 3 hours to see. Many visitors add the Grand Egyptian Museum, a short distance from the site.

Highlights

The Sphinx and the Pyramid of Khafre

The Sphinx, carved from the bedrock of the plateau, is about 73 metres long and 20 metres high. Behind it stands the Pyramid of Khafre, which looks the tallest because it is built on higher ground and still keeps some of its limestone casing at the top.

The Pyramid of Khufu, the Great Pyramid, is now over 138 metres high (about 147 metres originally). An electric shuttle links the viewpoints; camel and horse rides are negotiated separately, and the price must be agreed before you climb on.

Tips

  • The entrance fee for the plateau (and the extra charge for the interior of the Great Pyramid) could not be confirmed by an official source: check with the ticket office of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The Grand Egyptian Museum, a few kilometres away, needs another half day (mainly for the Tutankhamun collection): its ticket is bought in advance on its official website, and it is better visited during a stay in Cairo. The guided day trip from Hurghada, with transfers, lunch and entrance fees included, usually sells for 60 to 150 US dollars per person by road and 130 to 250 dollars by plane (ranges seen at agencies in October 2026). Compare what is included (guide, entrance fees, meals) and avoid beach sellers, whose prices are inflated. Dress lightly but cover your shoulders in strong sun, and bring a hat, water and closed shoes; accept no "gifts" or free photos from strangers.

How to get there

From Hurghada there are two options. By road, an agency minibus or coach leaves around 2 or 3am and comes back late at night (5 to 6 hours each way). By air, a domestic flight of about 1 hour reaches Cairo airport, then a transfer of about an hour reaches Giza; it is the least tiring option, but the most expensive. The plateau is in Giza, on the Cairo-Fayoum road, about thirty minutes from central Cairo without traffic.

Opening hours

Best: October to April, at opening time
Every day, from 07:00 or 08:00 to about 17:00 depending on the season (hours vary, check before you leave; hours change during Ramadan)
