Celebrating New Year in Hurghada means spending the night of 31 December on the Red Sea, with sunshine by day and still mild temperatures (about 20°C in the afternoon). Most parties take place in hotels, which organise a gala dinner with a show, music and sometimes fireworks; the marina and Sheraton Road also host evenings in restaurants and clubs. The period from Christmas to early January is the town's high season: hotels are full and their prices rise.

- The hotel gala dinner (buffet or set menu, entertainment, music past midnight) is the most common format, and on 31 December it is often charged on top of the stay, sometimes compulsorily for hotel guests: read the conditions when you book and ask what is included (drinks, show, seating). Non-guests can buy a gala table at some hotels, by reservation and at a price that varies by hotel. Book accommodation months ahead, as rooms and flights are the most expensive of the year. Coptic Christmas is celebrated on 7 January in Egypt (a public holiday), which adds a week of festivities at some hotels. Evenings are cool: bring a sweater or jacket, with night temperatures around 14°C. The sea is about 22°C, too cool for some: ask before booking if you want a heated pool.
How to get there
Hotels on Sheraton Road and at the marina are 15 to 25 minutes by taxi from the airport and the centre. On the evening of the 31st, taxis are hard to find after midnight: book your return with the hotel or by Uber in advance, and agree the price before getting into a regular taxi.
