Aswan: what to see in 1 or 2 days and how to get there from Hurghada

Updated on October 30, 2026

Aswan, on the Nile near the first cataract, is Egypt's Nubian city: sailing boats, Elephantine Island, Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk. For most travellers one day is enough for Philae, the High Dam and the obelisk; the second goes to Abu Simbel. There is no day trip from Hurghada: Aswan is about 220 km south of Luxor, and the offers are cruises or two- to three-day tours, see the 2-3 day cruise and Abu Simbel from Hurghada. Once in Aswan, the private half-day with High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and Philae is the most booked option.

Highlights

The river and Elephantine Island

The river and Elephantine Island

A felucca ride around the island at sunset is the nicest moment; agree the fare before boarding (no reliable 2026 price found).

The Unfinished Obelisk

The Unfinished Obelisk

It stayed in the granite quarry because of a crack; entry is said to be 30 to 60 EGP, from 8 or 9 am to about 5 pm (guide sources, to be confirmed).

The Nubian villages

The Nubian villages

Crossing to the colourful houses of Elephantine or the Nubian villages shows another Egypt; some travellers find the organised visit very touristy.

Practical info

Tips

  • For Philae, see Philae Temple. Several guides present the Nubian Museum as one of the best in the country. A private half-day by car with High Dam, obelisk and Philae costs 70 to 98 US dollars depending on the offer (seen October 2026); check what it includes (tickets, boat). Aswan is very hot from May to September.

How to get there

From Hurghada you must go through Luxor (about 290 to 320 km, four to five hours) then about 220 km further south: see Hurghada to Luxor: bus or transfer. Cruise tours leave from your Hurghada hotel. After Aswan, Abu Simbel is about 3.5 to 4 hours by road.

Opening hours

Best: October to April, at sunset
Each site has its own hours (generally 7-8 am to 4-5 pm); to ask on site, no official source found
