Sand, coral flat or pontoon: reading the listing

"Sandy beach" does not mean "gentle entry". Around Hurghada many hotels have a coral flat or a pontoon to reach deep water: great for snorkelling, less so for a child or an older person. Some Sahl Hasheesh hotels are described by travellers as having soft, shallow sandy entry, while Makadi Bay mixes sandy coves, coral flats and pontoons depending on the hotel. For coral, see hotels with a house reef.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Do you enter the water straight from sand, from a pontoon or by steps?
  • Do you need beach shoes because of coral or sea urchins?
  • Is the pontoon compulsory to swim, and how deep is it?
  • Is there a lifeguard on the beach?
