| Need | Where to go | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Common medicine, plaster | Neighbourhood pharmacy | Show the box or the name of the molecule; check the expiry date |
| Stomach bug, fever, injury | Private clinic or hospital, via the hotel | Keep the invoices for insurance |
| Dentist | Private clinic | Ask for a written quote before treatment |
| Diving accident | Dive centre, hyperbaric chamber | Confirm with your centre before diving |
Stomach bugs
Most cases come from water and food. Drink bottled water (see tap water and toilets), avoid ice from dubious places and salads washed in tap water. Rehydrate with oral rehydration solutions; seek care if fever, blood in the stool or vomiting last more than a day.
Insurance: get it before you leave
Private care is paid on the spot. Health and evacuation insurance avoids a heavy bill: see Egypt travel insurance. For the sea and sharks, see sharks and safety; for hospital or pharmacy scams, scams and safety.
FAQ
Are pharmacies open at night? Many open late, some 24 hours a day; ask the hotel for the nearest.
Are the medicines reliable? Buy in a pharmacy, never in a souk.
