The wind that makes Hurghada's afternoons hard for walkers also makes it one of the Red Sea's kitesurfing destinations. Spot guides give a main season from April or May to October, with winds of 15 to 25 knots, most often in the afternoon. From November to April there are still rideable days, usually three or four a week, but with bigger kites. The spots are in and especially around the city: El Gouna to the north, Soma Bay and Safaga to the south, and islands offshore.
Highlights
El Gouna
One guide counts five kitesurfing centres in the resort, with spots independent of the tide and steady wind: see El Gouna.
Soma Bay
A peninsula south of Hurghada, described as very windy all year. Schools there often require a paid rescue boat, because of the wind direction.
Safaga
The Soma Bay and Safaga area is a big playground: see Safaga.
The islands
Tawila, Geisum and Abu Minqar are named by spot guides, as is Tobia off Soma Bay, usually with a safari boat.

Tips
- I did not record lesson or rental prices: they vary by school, equipment and level, so ask for a quote. Choose a school with certified instructors, a rescue boat and recent equipment, and do not go alone to spots that require assistance. Beginners need not wait for the peak of the season, but lessons are easier in moderate wind. For public beaches and swimming, see Hurghada's public beaches.
How to get there
Hotel schools are reachable on site. For El Gouna or Soma Bay, allow for a taxi or a rental car: see getting around Hurghada.
