Islamic Cairo and Al-Muizz Street: visit, monuments and a day trip from Hurghada
Al-Muizz Street is the pedestrian artery of Fatimid Cairo, about one kilometre long between the Bab al-Futuh and Bab Zuweila gates, lined with mosques, madrasas and palaces from the 12th to the 18th century. The walk itself is free; the monuments (mosques, the Qalawun complex, Suhaymi House) are paid separately, so to ask on site, no official source found. Count 2 to 3 hours on foot, 4 hours with Khan el-Khalili. From Hurghada, it is a one-day trip by plane or a stop in a Cairo stay: do not combine it with the pyramids on the same day unless you accept a very long day.
Highlights

The Khan el-Khalili bazaar
The street leads to it naturally; spend the afternoon on tea and shops, as the street is nicest late in the day.

The nearby Citadel
A 10-minute drive away, it completes a visit of medieval Cairo.

Tips
- To sort the options: the 3 to 4-hour "Old Cairo" guided walking tour (Bab al-Futuh, Al-Hakim Mosque, Suhaymi House, Barquq Mosque, Al-Muizz Street and Khan el-Khalili, rated 4.7 from about 1,500 reviews, from 41 to 51 US dollars in October 2026) is the most booked; the private half-day by car (about 40 US dollars, 4.4 from 119 reviews) suits you if walking is hard. Dress covered for the mosques: see dress code and mosques. Politely refuse the "shops" a guide may impose. See also Khan el-Khalili and the Cairo Citadel.
How to get there
By Uber from central Cairo or from Giza (about 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic). From Hurghada: Cairo by plane or by bus.
