Dendera at a glance

Dendera is near Qena, on the west bank of the Nile, about 60 km north of Luxor. The temple is dedicated to Hathor, goddess of love and music. It dates mostly from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, which explains its condition: the hypostyle hall, its Hathor-headed columns and its painted ceilings have kept their colours. Allow one to two hours for the visit.
From Hurghada: distance and time
Hurghada is about 280 km from Luxor by the Qena road; Dendera lies a little before Luxor, on the Qena side, which makes it a logical stop on the way out or back. A Dendera-only trip is a shorter day than a day in Luxor, but the drive is still several hours each way: a local operator gives about ten hours in total. Leave early. What to see

- The hypostyle hall: columns topped with the face of Hathor and a ceiling decorated with astronomical scenes.
- The crypts and the roof: some parts are visited with a separate ticket; ask at the ticket office which ones are open on the day of your visit.
- The outer reliefs: on the back wall, reliefs from the late Ptolemaic period, including those linked to Cleopatra VII.
- The zodiac: the copy on site of the famous zodiac ceiling; the original is in the Louvre.
Combining it with Luxor
Dendera and Luxor combine well, but the day becomes very long. Two reasonable options: a night in Luxor (the comparison Luxor from Hurghada: which excursion details the formats) or Dendera alone as a half-day. For the classic day, see Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut.

If you book in Hurghada, ask how long the drive is, whether tickets are included and whether the guide is an Egyptologist, and book through your hotel or a known agency (see scams to avoid).
Practical tips
- Tickets and hours: the official Egyptian monuments website lists opening from 7 am to 5 pm. The foreigner entrance fee could not be confirmed: the figures we found are undated. Ask at the ticket office.
- What to wear: hat, sunglasses, water and closed shoes; shade is rare.
- Going further: Hurghada in 3 days includes a day in Luxor.

Can I go on my own from Hurghada? It is possible with a private driver; we have no verified price, so negotiate it before leaving.
Is there a French-speaking guide? It depends on the organiser: ask when booking.
