What happens in a hammam

A hammam is a steam bath: you lie on a heated slab in a humid room to sweat, then an attendant rubs your skin with a rough mitt (the scrub), rinses you with soap and water, and the session often ends with an oil massage. Most packages in Hurghada add a sauna, a jacuzzi or a rest room. The listings we saw quote two to three hours in all, transfer included, with a massage of about 45 minutes in the most detailed offers.

The hotel spa

Many hotels in the main resort areas (see where to stay in Hurghada) have a spa with hammam, sauna and massage rooms. Treatments are paid à la carte, often in dollars or euros; some spas also accept outside visitors. Ask reception for opening hours and the policy for non-guests: we found no public price list common to all of them.

The package with transfer

This is the simplest option if your hotel has no spa. Resellers seen in October 2026 listed "Turkish hammam with massage, sauna and jacuzzi" packages at about £24 to £26 or US$30 to $33 per person, with hotel pickup sometimes included and sometimes optional. Before booking, check three things: is the transfer included, is the massage length stated, can the booking be cancelled. Some reviews mention a rushed session and a light massage: a written duration is better than a promise.

The hammam in town

Massage and treatment centres also exist in town. Agree the price of each treatment before you undress, and do not let a tout lead you to a salon whose name you do not know. For other common traps, read scams and safety in Hurghada.

How a session goes

  1. Welcome, a hot drink, a locker for your belongings.
  2. Steam room to warm up and sweat.
  3. Mitt scrub, then soaping.
  4. Oil massage, often followed by rest.

Ask when booking whether men and women are received separately or at different times. Bring or ask for swimwear; in tourist hammams people usually keep underwear on or wear a wrap. If anything makes you uncomfortable, you can decline it at any moment.

Precautions

Avoid the hammam after long sun exposure if you are sunburnt: steam and scrubbing irritate. Drink water before and after. Pregnant women, people with heart or blood-pressure problems, or on medication should ask their doctor before entering a very hot room. Children are not admitted everywhere: ask for the minimum age before booking.

Tipping and payment

A tip is customary for the person who massages you; see money, payment and tipping in Hurghada for usual amounts. Keep small Egyptian pound notes. Be wary of a treatment presented as "free": ask for the total price, products included, before starting.

When to go

In the evening or late afternoon, after a day on the beach or at sea: the hammam relaxes the muscles and leaves the next morning free. For a day that is too hot or windy, see what to do in Hurghada when it is windy or too hot.

FAQ

How much does a hammam cost in Hurghada?

A reseller listed packages with massage at about £24 to £26 or US$30 to $33 in October 2026; the price of a treatment at a hotel spa depends on the hotel. Always ask for the total price before starting.

Is a hammam suitable for children?

Not always. Some places set a minimum age and the heat does not suit small children. For a family outing, see Hurghada with kids: what to book.

Do you have to undress completely?

No, usually: you keep swimwear or underwear on, or cover up with a wrap. State your preferences at reception.

Is the hotel transfer included?

Often, but not always: check the listing and ask for the pickup time in writing.
