What a partial warning means
A partial warning applies only to the areas it names. Whether you can cancel free of charge or an insurer pays depends on your contract: ask your tour operator and insurer in writing, as we do not give legal advice. Before booking, read our guide to travel insurance for Egypt.
What the German Foreign Office says about Red Sea resorts
- Particular caution when travelling to Egypt, tourist areas on the Red Sea included.
- Crime: in holiday areas such as Hurghada, sexual assaults occur, including inside hotel complexes. See our guide for women travelling alone in Hurghada.
- Dengue: the virus is reported on the Red Sea coast, mostly in Hurghada, occasionally in El Gouna and Al-Qusair. Mosquito protection and medical advice before travel make sense.
- Terrorism risk exists nationwide according to the office; avoid demonstrations and large gatherings.
Is Hurghada safe?
We do not answer in one word. What the sources show: the official warnings concern areas far from the hotel beaches, but the risks they list (crime, dengue, the general terrorism risk) apply to the coast too. For practical advice see scams and safety in Hurghada and sharks in Hurghada.
Check before you go
