At the airport and on the ground
- Airport. Bags are scanned. Keep medicines in their original box with the prescription, and ask the embassy about any strong painkiller, sleeping pill or attention-deficit treatment.
- Beaches, boats, parties. An offer of "hashish" to a tourist sometimes comes from a seller who then calls the police or asks for money: refusing is the only safe answer. See scams and safety in Hurghada.
- Alcohol and driving. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a serious offence.
If something goes wrong
Contact your consulate and a lawyer. Travel insurance does not cover a criminal offence, but it covers an accident or illness. See also before you go to Hurghada: laws, bans, visa.
FAQ
Is cannabis tolerated in Egypt?
No. The law applies fully to foreigners, whatever tolerance seems to exist on the street.
Can I bring my usual medicine?
Often yes, but some medicines are controlled: ask for permission before you travel and keep the prescription.
What is the risk for a small amount?
The Foreign Office says even small amounts can lead to life in prison or the death penalty.
